baseball and politics, but we want to start with a developing story. anything but an ordinary night in this north bay neighborhood where the bomb squad searched a house looking for explosives and you see what they found, the house is in the 3700 block of georgia street in vallejo. joe vasquez with more on what appears to be a bomb making factory. joe. >> dana, this situation is rattling a lot of nerves, not just because they evacuated an area near this house, but as you saw, also because they have had to detonate some of those materials right here in the middle of the georgia street. >> around 9:00 tonight, a bomb disposal team from the fbi and the solano sheriff department -- they lit a fuse and exploded

the pile. the cops say a man who lived here has been making small bombs in recent days. >> our information is, he is not only manufacturing bombs, but detonating them. >> vallejo police dispatched dozens of officers to evacuate nearby homes. s.w.a.t. officers prepared for the possibility of a long standoff. the man quickly surrendered. >> preparing to block streets off. the suspect came out of his residence, he was recognized ask taken into custody. >> police are not identifying the bomb making suspect, but investigators say they got a tip from his roommates that he was building an even bigger bomb today. the man is a squatter who has been blowing stuff up in recent days. they thought it was fireworks. >> he's just a creep on the block. >> he and his neighbors called police because they believe the man is dangerous. >> you know, the guy, i smell chemicals. i would tell the police officers. he would just be making all

kinds of noise. it would be so loud, it would shake my house. >> and just moments ago, we learned that will not be the last detonation here in the streets because right after that happened, the bomb squad took off, but we learned that investigators went back inside and found several more pipe bombs, as they are being described. they have to come back out and detonate more materials before the night is over. >> joe, they detonated that in the street. did it leave a divot? do they have to repave that? >> they did that for safety reasons. sometimes they will do that in the backyard and i'm told maybe they are considering doing that in the yard instead of right out here in the middle of the street, which did rattle a lot of cages out here. i should mention, no motive yet. why was this guy doing this? they are trying to figure that out. >> joe vasquez, thank you. >> well, it was lively, it was

quite a bit of fun to watch. cbs 5 political reporter, grace lee, on the vice presidential debate that was hard to turn away from. grace. >> certainly was. what a difference a week makes. from the get go, the vice president was on the offensive. and apparently, it made a difference in the polls. in a cbs news instant poll of uncommitted voters, 50% gave joe biden the win compared with 31% for paul ryan. they were also asked who would be better able to take over as president if necessary. and going in, voters actually favored the republican nominee, that shifted significantly after this faceoff tonight, perhaps, because time and again, the president attack dog in chief showed why he had earned that nickname. they are a generation apart in age and worlds apart in ideology. the vice president layed down two phrases that were missing from the first presidential

debate. >> these people are my mom and dad. the people i grew up with, my neighbors. they pay more tax than governor romney pays in his federal income tax. i've had it up to here. it's about time they take some responsibility here. >> congressman ryan was not afraid to fire back, attacking the vp for his notorious public gab and his need to shine in this debate. >> mitt romney is a good man. he cares about 100% of americans in this country. with respect to that quote, i think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way. >> i always say what i mean. >> i know you are under a lot of duress, but i think people will be better served if we don't interrupt each other. >> don't take all the four minutes then. >> that layed the ground work for the tone, with the two candidates unafraid to mix it

up. >> not mathematically possible. >> it's been done before. it's what we are proposing. >> it has never been done before. >> it's been done a couple of times. >> right-hand lane reagan. >> ronald reagan. >> go to my website, he sent me two letters saying, by the way, can you send me some stimulation money for companies here in wisconsin? we sent millions of dollars. >> he did ask for stimulous money. >> on two occasions, we advocated for constituents advocating for grants. >> i love that. this is such a bad program and he writes me a letter saying, the reason we need this stimulous, it will create growth and jobs. his words. >> i want to move on here to medicare and entitlements. i think we have gone over this quite enough. >> by the way, any letter you send me, i'll entertain.

>> the night would not be complete without a bidennism. >> that's a bunch of malarkey. not a single thing you said is accurate. >> the is a bunch of stuff. here's the deal. >> what does that mean? >> it is simply inaccurate. >> it's irish. >> we call it malarkey. >> we have a whole lot of words there. joining me is joe. >> the king of malarkey. we talked about the awards and body language and show some of what we were seeing tonight and a lot of smiles from the vice president. he looked directly in the camera a lot of times. >> so, there were several times if you watched the whole debate, if perhaps the vice president, just like president obama last week was not aware the fact it was a split screen and people were watching for a reaction shot from him. and so when he was listening and not interrupting, he was oftentimes smiling or shaking his head or making a face.

for some people, that might be a turn off, but i have to tell you, given the age difference and experience difference and the life experience difference, beyond that political experience between these two people, i think the body language reenforced the verbal message we were getting. this is a young junior account executive debating the ceo of the company. biden came across as credible. i don't think he came across as rude. he knew more of subjects being asked of him than his opponent. >> that was clear when he talked about foreign policy. we want to talk about troops in afghanistan. >> you would rather americans -- >> we are already sending americans to do the job, but fewer of them. >> that's right, we are sending in more afghans to do the job. >> you said this was a really telling moment for the congressman. >> well, it was, because i think unfortunately for paul

ryan or fortunately, if you take the other position, is strength is not foreign policy, but he chose to engage the vice president on the subject. and he drew the line in the sand, forgive the pun, saying we had a failed policy of chasing, or engaging afghanistan and not supporting the troops. the vice president's reaction was, we are trying to get the government and its own troops to provide for security as we draw down on our own. he forced the congressman to say that american troops should be put in harm's way instead of afghan troops and defending afghanistan. and at that moment, i think ryan realized he was saying the wrong thing and i think it was exemplary, remember, this is something that president obama hopes to exploit as a weakness for mitt romney as well. that was a very telling moment in this debate tonight. >> we heard the vp talking

about classified information, talking about his experience over and over tonight. now what we did want to take, when the congressman had a good moment. take a look. >> the unemployment rate is today? >> sure do. >> it's 10%. >> you know what it was the day you guys came in? 8.5%. that's how it is going all around america. >> that's not how it's going. it's going down. >> is that his zinger tonight? >> it was obviously on the issue that romney hopes to exploit is jobs. he sort of suckered him into saying twice. and joe biden said right, and sort of acted like he hadn't heard what he just heard. if you were paying attention, that was a good moment and in general, when he stayed on the question of jobs, the congressman was credible tonight. >> joe joining us, thank you. back to you. it was a fun night in politics.

>> thank you, grace. the other big contest came with a very unhappy ending for the oakland a's. their phenomenal season came up short tonight with a game five loss to the detroit tigers. kristen ayres is in reaction with how fans are reacting to the heartbreaking loss. >> reporter: a lot of these were waving around, people were believing for another walkoff in that 9th inning. instead, they got a shutout. >> optimism doesn't begin to describe it. religious is more like it. these fans watch that wednesday night walkoff. >> coming around. >> and they believe. >> come back and dominate. they have all the momentum. >> the momentum and home field advantage. but could they turn that into

an american league pennant? a boost this city could really use. >> i think it is good news for the city. >> for a team that the mayor described as underdogs. >> they get a bad rap. they are under funded. >> not so different from the city itself. >> people count us out and we surprise people. >> with the team scoreless into the late innings, another surprise is what a's fans were rooting for most. >> let's hope we slaughter them. >> it took one second. >> okay, and the ending score there, 6-0. there was a slaughter. it was the oakland athletics, but fans are excited here tonight, still optimistic. live in oakland, cbs 5. >> a swing and a miss and romo strikes out rowan. the san francisco -- the first two ever in division play of the national league. >> it was torture, but the giants made history today in

revolution. a majestic redwood tree isn't going to make it through the construction of a new library in berkeley. cbs 5 reporter, elizabeth cook, on what happened. >> for four-year-old razel, this is more than just a tree. >> this is all trees. we want it to be -- we want it to stay there. >> the nearly 100 foot redwood has been a few feet from her apartment's back door. >> now it's like, they all do. >> it was a highly contested issue. the new west branch project forced five of the redwoods to be cut down. one tree was saved and it was supposed to be the foe focal point. but the trees roots had been damaged by construction equipment. making it unhealthy and unstable. >> i feel devastated by it. it was very sad to watch all

the trees be cut down one after the other on a sunny afternoon. >> the library claims the contractors west bay builders, are responsible for the tree's damage. and they signed a contract to protect it. but west bay builders told cbs 5, damage to the tree was unavoidable. rays will love to spend hours in her backyard, now it's just not the same. >> we wanted it to stay up. >> the tree will be removed in the next couple of days and the contractor is expected to pay for damage. in berkeley, elizabeth cook, cbs 5. coming up, it will be one last trip for shuttle bus. this one on the streets of southern california. the one thing needed to get endeavor on the road. 13 to 20 degrees below normal today as far as our highs were concerned. good evening, everybody. the rain is now ending, but the
